Medical Mentoring for Addictions and Pain
Welcome to Medical Mentoring for Addictions and
Pain (MMAP)!
The Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) and the College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) have partnered to develop a new shared-care model
in the fields of addictions, pain management, and methadone prescribing.
Patients presenting with the complications of opioid addiction and chronic
pain are difficult to manage in the context of a family practice. Physicians who
have focused practices in pain management or mental health and addictions
especially those skilled in methadone prescribing, are often isolated from
family physicians and unable to share their expertise with them.
Modeled after the OCFP’s Collaborative Mental Healthcare Network (CMCHN) [see
www.ocfp.on.ca for further information], the
MMAP initiative is intended to support physicians with expertise in pain
management and addictions including methadone prescribers to mentor family
physicians interested in chronic pain and or addictions.
The project will be initially piloted in four regions: Thunder Bay, Ottawa,
Chatham Kent and Halton.
We are looking for Ontario physicians who are interested to function as
mentors or mentees. The program will provide financial and educational support
for this venture.
There is evidence that collaboration can improve patient morbidity and
mortality, organizational efficiencies, and provider satisfaction. We hope you
will consider this opportunity!
